Located in Calicut, Kerala, SOHO Office is both a workspace and a residence. At the heart of this compact building lies a defining element, the stairwell. More than a means of movement, it becomes the spine of the structure, choreographing light, material, and experience. Each flight carries its own identity through shifts in form and porosity, turning a spatial constraint into an architectural opportunity.
With neighboring buildings pressing close, light was drawn in through a rooftop cutout, and the stairwell became the conduit for this illumination, a vertical void guiding sunlight across all four levels. Steel plate stairs, slanted risers, and a custom L door negotiate space with precision, balancing structure and headroom while keeping the void uninterrupted.
The entry sequence unfolds as an ascent, earthy red steps rising toward an open sky. This gesture transforms arrival into experience, offering a sense of release from the density of the street. Inside, a palette of soft pinks and greens with accents of red and perforated metal creates lightness and warmth. Built in furniture follows ergonomic precision, encouraging flow and teamwork across an open plan defined purely by furniture and light.
Moments of play break the monotony of formality. Music equipment and antiques punctuate the interiors, connecting modern work life to memory and comfort. SOHO Office is both pragmatic and poetic, a workplace designed not just for productivity, but for optimism, rhythm, and human connection.
