THE VALLEY HOUSE
Sulthan Bathery

Perched on a sloping site in Sulthan Bathery, Kerala, Khaldoon House is designed to flow with the land rather than resist it. The steep terrain was shaped into two gentle levels, minimizing cut and fill and allowing the home to settle naturally into the hillside.
The single storey residence unfolds across these levels, unified by a sloping roof that follows the site’s gradient. Inverting the roof over the upper block introduced height and light, creating an airy, expressive interior.

The lower level houses the living, dining, and kitchen spaces opening north to lush views and soft daylight while the elevated block contains the bedrooms, each extending into private patios and garden courts.

Two curved southern courtyards act as buffers against sun and rain, forming shaded outdoor spaces beside the social areas. Every element, from the roofline to the courtyards, reflects a quiet harmony between built form, climate, and the mountain landscape.
